Senior Research Scientist - Logical Semantics Specialist

Thomson Reuters is at the forefront of developing technology that will revolutionize how people access and use information by interacting with intelligent machines. The Center for Cognitive Computing is a newly-formed branch of Thomson Reuters R&D dedicated to advancing the state of the art in machine perception, reasoning, knowledge management and human-computer interfaces.

We are looking for candidates with innovative approaches and the expertise to combine and improve existing technologies into Cognitive Computing products that will help our professional customers find the answers they are looking for. We are looking for a passionate Research Scientist or Sr. Research Scientist (depending on experience) with a proven record of applied innovation, and interested in taking Artificial Intelligence technologies to the next level. We are looking for a creative individual who can understand complex business problems, and who can develop scalable algorithms and prototypes to demonstrate the art of possible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement and validate algorithms at scale to solve challenging real world problems
  • Collaborate with technologists and business stakeholders to drive innovation from conception to production


  • PhD in Computational Linguistics or Computer Science
  • Proficient programming skills in at least one high-level language such as Java, Scala, Python, Prolog, LISP, Haskell, C/C++.
  • Experience with knowledge representation, knowledge acquisition/knowledge engineering
  • Knowledge of and mastery of at least one from the former and several from the latter areas:

Natural Language Processing or Machine Learning; or Information Retrieval; and Models for Meaning Representation, Propositional Semantics, Discourse Representation Theory, First-order Predicate Logics, Description Logics, Robust Semantic Parsing, Lexical/Distributional Semantics, Discourse Modeling, Dialog Systems, partially Observable Markov Processes, Common-Sense Reasoning/inference.

  • Project-based experience with using and implementing extensions of or applications for some of the following tools: Protégé, Racer/RacerPro, Isabel, Cyc, CEL, Chainsaw, Clipper, DReW, FaCT++, HermiT, jcel, JFact, Mastro, OntoBroker, Bossam, MORe, ontop, Pellet, RDFox, Snorocket, TRILL, TrOWL, KARMA, HydrOWL, PAGOdA or similar.
  • Must be a self-motivated, lifelong learner, who is passionate about turning new ideas into solutions for our customers; we prefer people who are passionate working on a stream of changing projects over people who prefer to stay in a single, narrow sub-domain of research;
  • Results-driven focus with the ability to prioritize deliverables that have the most significant, measurable impact;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English;
  • Publication track record desired, but practical can-do and system builder attitude vital.

Location - Toronto (preferred location), open to other major Thomson Reuters location
