Quantitative Analyst, Natural Gas Research & Forecast

Job Description

The Commodities Research and Forecasts (CRF) group was formed in 2012 and sits within the Financial business of Thomson Reuters. CRF is comprised of analysts providing analytic insight and model forecasts into the oil, natural gas, power, carbon, agriculture and metals global markets. Our core mission is turning data overload into market knowledge that empowers commodities professionals to make better informed decisions.

Role Purpose

  • Design and develop new methodologies, quantitative models, analysis and commentary (as relevant) that enhance existing or new products and services
  • Maintain existing product performance and independent analysis standards
  • Internally, work with various departments to grow new ideas and expand the scope of existing products
  • Externally, continue to build the company brand by maintaining strong relationships with  press and clients while also focusing on growing new relationships, by adding value and commentary

Responsibilities

  • Report into Thomson Reuters Director of North America Natural Gas and NGLs Research

  • Support target customers: analysts/traders active in North America Natural Gas and NGLs markets

  • Lead and develop North America Natural Gas analytical deliverables for Thomson Reuters customers

  • Develop and/or enhance models for supply and demand

  • Develop and main charts/tables in Eikon

  • Perform statistical analysis on time-series data

  • Perform maintenance/updates of econometric models written in Matlab code (preferred)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering, Economics, Finance or other relevant field
  • Minimum of 3 years experience (either academic or commercial) in natural gas research, analysis, model development
  • Experience researching and applying North America natural gas pipeline flows - regional specialization preferred
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • Fundamental analysis skills especially drivers of price formation and direction, supply & demand, storage
  • Self-motivated and independent – demonstrated success initiating new ideas for product development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degrees: MA/MS/MBA in one or more fields listed in Minimum Qualifications
  • 5+ years experience of fundamental analysis of North America natural gas markets
  • Experience writing natural gas market reports or research papers
  • Good working knowledge of analytical tools such as Matlab, R, SPSS, SAS, etc.
  • Experience using GPCM (Gas Pipeline Competition Model)
  • Technical skills in application usage/development involving Oracle/SQL, Java, Python highly advantageous
