VP, API and SRE Strategy

This is what we need as the Tax & Accounting Business of Thomson Reuters is continuing its transformation into a more modern set of capabilities and services for our clients. We deliver tax and accounting technology to corporations, businesses, and professionals around the world that increases efficiency and saves vast amounts of time.

We are looking for a serious engineering and operations executive to collaborate with the CTO. The VP of API and SRE Strategy will define and own the strategy and governance model for these functions within our worldwide organization of over 2200 developers and business analysts. You will bring platform and API methodologies and experience to the company. You will create an operational excellence and geo dispersed cloud delivery awareness to our organization. In this position, you will work very closely with the chief architect to define and align the strategy around our API first approach when it comes to delivering our products, content, and data to our clients. You will also work hand in hand with the various product and BU development executives to ensure we deliver necessary SLA commitments and product capabilities via APIs to our ever-demanding client base.


  • Lead a small team (Guild model) of engineers and executives to set the overall API & SRE approach
  • Provide guidance to peers and leaders (management and technical) across a vast organization to deliver on strategy and follow governance model
  • Create, prioritize, and execute on platform roadmap
  • Document and manage product requirements, stories and backlog
  • Write and manage user documentation to describe API’s, schemas, models, and more
  • Define standards for product development to ensure all products meet requirements for fast deployment, high availability, secure, and low mean time to resolution (MTTR) scalability and monitored sites while enabling low friction deployments
  • Support the whole platform, using technical analysis and process experience to improve the reliability scalability and MTTR of our platforms
  • Interact and collaborate with other internal departments to formulate recommendations and actions
  • Build and track performance metrics and make enhancements to existing metrics and reports
  • Evangelize benefits and reasoning behind SRE and API strategy and standards
  • Evaluate and assess necessary cloud, delivery and emerging technology capabilities to enable product strategy and vision


  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in a software engineering and delivery discipline
  • 10+ years of software development leadership and executive positions
  • 5+ years in leading delivery and operations teams in a cloud native environment
  • Passion for APIs and developer experience; strong empathy for the developer audience
  • Ability to understand, evaluate and discuss technical integration scenarios and architectural concepts
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and understanding of modern web/SaaS technologies and systems
  • Prior experience as a software developer, expert-level knowledge of RESTful APIs
  • Extensive experience working with clients and responding to requirements, as well as outages and system issues
  • Experience presenting strategy and operational updates to senior executives
  • Excellent critical thinking, communication, presentation, documentation, troubleshooting, and collaborative problem-solving skills
  • 50% travel required

Experience in some, but not all of the following:

  • Public/Private Cloud platforms, i.e., AWS, Google App Engine, Azure, IBM
  • Configuration management tools like Ansible, Puppet, etc.
  • Cloud-native architectures
  • Commercial or open source monitoring systems, i.e., Nagios, Zabbix, Open Falcon, etc.
  • Automated deployment/ Continuous Integration tools, i.e., Maven, Jenkins, SVN, GitHub, etc.
  • Virtualization and Linux containers, i.e., KVM, Docker, etc.
  • Cluster management/orchestration software, i.e., Mesos, Kubernetes, etc.
  • Web server and HTTP proxy servers, i.e., Tomcat, Nginx, Squid etc.
