Lead Research Scientist

Job Description

The Corporate Research & Development group (and the newly formed Center for Cognitive Computing) are part of Thomson Reuters Labs, and provide research & development services to internal business units and senior decision makers. We advance the state of the art in applied computer science, including information systems and decision support systems, machine perception, reasoning, natural language processing, machine learning, information retrieval/search engines, knowledge management and human-computer interfaces.

We are currently seeking a passionate Lead Scientist  or Senior. Research Scientist (subject to experience) with a proven record of applied innovation, who is interested in taking Artificial Intelligence technologies to the next level. We are looking for a creative individual who can understand complex business problems, and who can develop scalable algorithms and prototypes to demonstrate the art of possible.  

Key Responsibilities:

As a research scientist, you will be responsible for conducting applied research and in staying current on state-of-the-art methods. You will be expected to participate in multiple applied research projects and your duties will include: 

  • Plan, design, implement and evaluate novel algorithms to solve challenging real-world problems in the verticals finance, regulatory/risk, legal, tax, accounting, and news.
  • Collaborate with technologists and business stakeholders to drive innovation from conception to production.
  • Authoring research plans
  • Performing original research (designing algorithms or feature sets for machine learning)
  • Designing experiments
  • Validating key methods at scale and developing prototypes
  • You will be expected to author technical reports and whitepapers to survey areas of R&D to recommend on trends and the state of the art in our focus areas. In addition, you are encouraged to maintain an active academic presence through publication and conference attendance.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • PhD (or Masters Degree + equivalent relevant experience) in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Applied Mathematics, Natural Language Processing or related field preferred with relevant industry experience
  • Proficient programming skills in Java and Python
  • Experience with statistical data analysis, experimental design, and hypotheses validation
  • Familiarity with probabilistic models and an understanding of the mathematical concepts underlying machine learning methods 
  • Must be a self-motivated, lifelong learner, who is passionate about turning new ideas into solutions for our customers
  • Results-driven focus with the ability to prioritize deliverables that have the most significant, measurable impact
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills  

Project-based experience with some of the following:

  • Applied machine learning (e.g. libSVM, TensorFlow, Scikit-learn or similar)
  • Natural Language Processing (e.g., ClearTK, ScalaNLP/Breeze, ClearNLP, OpenNLP, NLP4J, or similar)
  • Statistical data analysis and experimental design (e.g., using R, Matlab, iPython, etc.)
  • Information retrieval and search engines, e.g. Solr/Lucene/Elastic Search
  • Databases (traditional and noSQL) including experience in hands-on processing, representation and transformation of large amounts of data 

Desirable Qualifications, Skills & Experience:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning, Knowledge Bases, Probabilistic Graphical Models, Bayesian Belief Networks, and/or Inference Engines.
  • Distributed computing platforms, such as Hadoop (Hive, HBase, Pig), Spark, GraphLab
