Reuters, the news and media division of Thomson Reuters, is the world’s largest international multimedia news provider reaching more than one billion people every day. Reuters provides trusted business, financial, national, and international news to professionals via Thomson Reuters desktops, the world's media organizations, and directly to consumers at Reuters.com.
Reuters’ U.S. General News desk is seeking an experienced correspondent to be the team’s eyes and ears during the overnight hours on weekends. For this part-time job, the successful candidate is mostly working alone covering the entire country during the Saturday and Sunday overnights. He or she is expected to write all important news stories that break during those hours, as well as update long-running trunk stories as developments unfold during the early morning hours. Many of the biggest U.S. General News break overnight, including the Baltimore and Ferguson riots, the Orlando nightclub massacre, the death of Muhammad Ali, the Oakland “Ghost Ship” fire, to name a few recent examples.
There is also a steady drumbeat of second-tier stories that need to be handled before the day shift begins. The ideal candidate should also be able to handle big breaking financial and companies stories. The overnight shift is a time when the rest of the staff is generally off duty . As a consequence, the overnighter is expected to be a reliable self-starter with precise news judgment, someone who can immediately identify a story that our readers need and someone with the ability to write the story quickly, accurately and in a way that a global audience will understand. The weekend overnighter needs to have enough confidence and experience to operate without direct supervision.
At the same time, the overnighter is someone who can recognize when a story is too big to handle alone. He and she must be counted on to alert a senior editor immediately when a big story breaks during the shift. The successful candidate may be asked to also pitch in during day shifts, travel for big breaking stories and deliver initiative stories as needed. Given the nature of the shift, the successful candidate will also have demonstrated a long record of reliability and punctuality.
