Position Summary

Reuters Video News is looking for a dynamic and talented Video Journalist to cover general news in Hong Kong at a time when relations with mainland China are growing increasingly difficult amid calls for greater autonomy. He or She should be eager to take on new challenges to help drive our daily coverage and be part of a high-profile, high-performing team responsible for covering news, life, innovation and feature stories.

The successful candidate should have strong English language and scripting abilities, able to speak, read and write business Cantonese (some basic Mandarin a added bonus), to a level he or she can work independently in the field and deal with local clients and sources. He or She should have an experienced shooting background, both desk and field producing experience, be able to edit, have a strong personality to meet tough challenges and deadlines. 
Working closely with television crews and multi-media teams in Hong Kong, the successful candidate should be a proven self-starter with excellent communication skills, an unflappable temperament and a passion for news gathering and visual story telling. It is essential to have a global perspective to go with a strong knowledge of Hong Kong and the Greater China story.

The video news industry is going through a period of significant change, largely driven by technology and the rapidly changing habits of news consumers. The successful candidate will be very customer focused and will be able to tailor content for Reuters clients in the growing digital sector as well as existing broadcast news customers.

Role Responsibilities

  • Able to shoot with a professional video camera, produce, edit, write and deliver a story from the office or field.
  • Coordinate daily news coverage with multimedia teams and work closely with the Beijing, Singapore and London news desks.
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and Cantonese
  • Sharp eye for visual news elements and video story-telling.
  • Strong understanding of television editorial technology and social media newsgathering skills.
  • Meet tight deadlines and coordinate daily planning.
  • Respond courageously to major breaking news events, acting quickly and with live news needs in mind.           

Qualifications/Required Skills

  • At least 2-3 years experience as a camera operator, desk/field producer, script writer and editor
  • Strong video editing and script writing skills
  • Excellent English writing skills
  • Writes and speaks Cantonese fluently, some Mandarin a bonus  
  • A track record of working with multi-media teams in a bureau and in the field
  • Thorough understanding of the latest Digital video technologies used for storytelling, filming, editing, transmission and sharing
  • Experience in broadcast and-or agency television newsgathering and production
  • Strong ability to drive accuracy and speed
  • Knowledge and commitment to defend Reuters Trust Principles
