Based in Almaty, the Chief Correspondent will oversee our file form the five &#8216;Stans&#8217; of the former Soviet Union - Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan - in coordination with the regional Bureau Chief in Moscow and the news editors in London. This is a huge and diverse area with a population of about 65 million people spanning more than 4 million square km. The five countries are at different stages of economic and political development, two decades after they become independent from the Soviet Union, and each offers its own challenges and fascinations.<br/><br/> The successful candidate will be a top-notch writer and motivated self-starter who is equally at home writing an oil snap as a breaking story about miners rioting in a remote town. He or she will drive a file in which the region&#8217;s energy resources play a dominant role and help provide strong coverage of the big companies in the region that are sitting on oil and gas resources, some of them quoted on foreign stock exchanges. Banking is also developing in the region. There is a potential for political upheaval in many parts of the region and Kazakhstan is a launchpad for international space missions. The Chief Correspondent will lead from the front by coming up with imaginative ideas for longer-form enterprise stories and spot news. He or she will write stories with flair, providing the regional and national big picture, spotting themes before our rivals and developing them through sources and staff on the ground. The successful candidate will need proven writing skills to comment and interpret market events, sound news judgment to select top stories from Reuters Russia & CIS correspondents, and the ability to lead an online debate among participating investors. The candidate will need to demonstrate critical thinking in keeping with Reuters editorial standards and provide thought leadership on events as diverse as elections, bond issues or interest rate moves. The candidate will need to show the ability to work under pressure with a diverse team, to forge relationships with news sources and clients, and to dedicate him or herself to the success of the project.
