Reuters is looking for an experienced journalist to fill one of the most demanding and rewarding jobs in our newsroom. The Iraq bureau chief runs a talented team of reporters in a country that remains one of the world’s most compelling stories, 15 years after the U.S.-led invasion that overthrew Saddam Hussein.
Iraq is home to a range of complex and fascinating stories. Shi’ite and Sunni forces continue to vie for power. A Kurdish feud is heating up in the north. Sectarian and political divisions plague Baghdad. The war against Islamic State is far from over, with the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi believed to be alive. Iran and its proxy Shi’ite militias are ever more powerful. A civil war rages next door in Syria.
The successful candidate will lead our coverage of all of these issues, as well as the massive economic change underway in the oil-rich state. Corruption and sabotage, as well as poor security, have blocked the recovery of an economy crippled by decades of conflict and sanctions. Iraq’s oil wealth is key to its future, but the country has become one of the many staging grounds for the regional battle between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
We are looking for an experienced bureau chief to write the story of Iraq and help lead a multimedia team of reporters. The successful candidate will be a fluent writer with insight into Iraq and the region, and a gift for capturing the human impact of events, as well as their political and economic significance. S/he will understand the importance of being faster than our competitors on key economic and political aspects of one of the world’s top news stories.
S/he will be required to write longer-form enterprise pieces and deliver compelling multimedia work. S/he will have keen news judgment, along with the editing and mentoring skills required to hone and sharpen the work of colleagues. S/he will keep personal and staff security in mind at all times. Arabic is a distinct advantage.
