Reuters is seeking an experienced reporter and writer for the position of Equities Correspondent based in Johannesburg, to cover companies in South Africa, a key emerging market.
The successful candidate should have strong news judgment, a flair for writing and a strong commitment to beating the competition. Are you adept at building sources among tight-lipped bankers, lawyers and company executives? Do you like breaking stories? Do you like digging into industry trends and explaining to readers around the world why something that’s happening in South Africa is interesting and important?
South Africa is home to a $1.1 trillion equity market that boasts scores of fascinating companies, from Naspers – a $58 billion e-commerce powerhouse – to Steinhoff, a once unstoppable multinational retail group now fighting for survival after discovering irregularities in its accounts. The appointment of Cyril Ramaphosa as the country’s president has given business leaders and labour alike hope that the economy will turn up. Will that happen? And how? Who will benefit? Who will lose? We want you to report that story at speed and in detail through the country’s business story.
Based in Johannesburg, the reporter will be part of a team at the front-line of corporate developments in South Africa and across sub-Saharan Africa, from the spread of mobile telephony and banking, to cross-border M&A and the expansion of multinational retailers, breweries and consumer goods firms.
The successful candidate will love covering companies but should also be ready to cover political and general news and to handle occasional desk duties and weekend shifts.
The role is ideal for someone keen to develop sources and break news.
