Chief Correspondent, Reuters New Zealand

Thomson Reuters News & Editorial 2/7/2018 3:06:17 AM Wellington, New Zealand
Job Description

Company Overview

Thomson Reuters is the leading source of intelligent information for the world’s businesses and professionals. We combine industry expertise with innovative technology to deliver critical information to leading decision makers in the financial and risk, legal, tax and accounting, intellectual property and science and media markets, powered by the world’s most trusted news organization.

Reuters News Pacific is looking for a Chief Correspondent based in Wellington, New Zealand to lead a two-person bureau with responsibility across economics, political and general news, markets, companies, commodities and energy sectors.

Essential Responsibilities

The job calls for an experienced, energetic and confident reporter with a solid grounding in real-time coverage of economics, from snapping market-moving data to conducting interviews with RBNZ officials. You will be as comfortable breaking news on trade talks, covering an earthquake or delving into a fast-rising corporate. Sharp writing and a track record of making contacts are key, enabling the correspondent to generate exclusive and analytical material.

New Zealand has a small, open economy with the world’s 10th-most traded currency. Its closely watched central bank has been a world leader on issues from inflation targeting to macro-prudential measures aimed at it’s hot housing market. New Zealand was the first OECD country to sign a free trade deal with China and continues to deepen its ties with the Asian economic powerhouse. New Zealand is also the world’s largest dairy exporter, a well-known centre for movie making and often tops the list of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. Its corporate sector is small but innovative and interesting, providing plenty of scope for an enterprising reporter.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong news judgment and writing ability
  • Ability to make contacts and break news
  • Ability to spot developing trends and deliver differentiated initiative stores
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Formal people leadership experience is preferred (but not essential)
  • Experience in multimedia storytelling
  • Experience in economy reporting is plus
