Senior Software Engineer

Job Description

Get in on the ground floor at Thomson Reuters’ brand new Toronto Technology Centre and join one of Canada’s preeminent hubs for innovation. The Thomson Reuters Toronto Technology Centre is focused on growing emerging skills such as cognitive computing, visualization, user experience and cloud development to build customer-centric platforms and solutions of the future.

We are looking to bring onboard a Senior Software Engineer to our new Open Platform Core Services team.  This Toronto-based role reports into the Finance & Risk Technology organization and will focus on creating a scalable and robust solution to help migrate key platform components to public cloud.  The challenges include building highly scalable solutions capable of handling millions of requests and hundreds of applications and services concurrently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help build and lead a new and growing team from the ground up in Toronto.  Define the processes, standards and culture that will be the foundation of the new Technology Centre.
  • Architect and implement high scalable and secure infrastructure that supports user authentication and authorization for one of Thomson Reuters’ most important and largest applications: Eikon.
  • Support mission critical production services that handle millions of requests daily.  Our solutions provide access to real-time market data, news, fundamental data and analytics that drive millions of dollars of financial decisions a day and must never go down.
  • Collaborate across the organization, independently gather requirements and drive changes.
  • Bring your passion and knowledge of new technologies and industry trends to keep our technologies on the cutting edge.



  • Minimum Bachelor Degree or higher in Computer Science or related area

Required Skills:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development in the context of web development, such as C/ or Java.
  • 3+ years of experience in developing systems involving client side code, web services and databases.
  • Experience with modern development methodologies, including agile, continuous build and unit testing processes.
  • Some experience with designing, developing, debugging, optimizing and managing complex highly reliable and scalable production systems.
  • Familiarity with basic security concepts such as authentication, authorization and auditing.
  • Strong passion for technology and a willingness to learn and apply new skills.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed and flexible with an ability to translate high-level direction into solutions and development projects.
  • Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Desired Skills:

  • Familiarity with identity access management concepts and systems for an enterprise network.
  • Experience with Active Directory administration, Windows authentication, Linux authentication and cloud-based platforms.
  • Experience in deploying and administering ForgeRock solution.
  • Experience with or knowledge of public cloud service providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure
  • Experience in other web technologies: HTML frontend, Javascript, Node.js, Java, SQL
