Reuters is looking for a talented and experienced Spanish-language all-round journalist to run a small reporting team in Venezuela, one of the most newsworthy countries in the Americas. Although it sits on the world’s biggest oil reserves, Venezuela is going through an appalling economic and social crisis. President Nicolas Maduro's socialist government is fighting for survival and turning ever more autocratic, faced with major domestic political opposition and international condemnation. The next 18 months could see a foreign debt default and change of government in a presidential election. We need an SLS head who can first & foremost lead the file - telling the big picture stories in a compelling way, winning the breaking news, and coming up with a constant flow of initiative stories, especially on the political beat. The successful candidate will also marshal all output from two other Spanish-language reporters and a network of keen but raw provincial stringers. He or she must have passion for the story here, writing talent, willingness to put up with often tricky working conditions & a tough city, and diplomatic skills to deal with prickly officials. Hostile environment experience and a sense of humor are essential. The successful candidate must work smoothly with English-language colleagues and with the multimedia team, and be the main point of coordination with the Spanish-language service editor.
