We are seeking an energetic reporter and an insightful writer to join our soft commodities team in Brazil, the largest exporter of several agricultural goods from coffee to sugar and soy that are staples for consumers around the globe. This journalist will be primarily responsible for breaking news in a sector where reports on harvest estimates, weather conditions and transport bottlenecks impact prices globally. The successful candidate will cover Brazil’s fast-growing corn and soy production, which is being boosted by strong demand from China. Brazil’s vast agricultural sector has been one of the few bright spots during the country’s worst recession in a century and it is now attracting acquisition interest from abroad as a centre-right government looks to loosen restrictions on foreign land ownership. Meanwhile, environmentalists are voicing alarm that President Michel Temer’s administration is turning a blind eye to rising deforestation as farms encroach deeper into the Amazon rainforest.
QualificationsWe are seeking a journalist with a proven track record of developing sources and breaking market-moving news, as well as the flair to bring commodities stories to life for the general reader and explore the far-reaching issues facing this vital sector.
