We are looking for a top quality journalist to lead our coverage in the six nations of the Southern Cone – Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Peru. Based in Buenos Aires – one of the architectural jewels of Latin America – the regional bureau chief will be responsible for coordinating reporting teams in English and Spanish across a vast area that is economically, politically and culturally diverse. We are seeking a candidate with a track record of reporting or overseeing enterprise projects to guide our reporting from political analyses to business stories with global appeal. From droughts in the pampas to efforts to boost shale oil production in Argentina, the region is of enormous interest to global commodities markets and can set the prices on exchanges in New York and London. The vast lithium deposits of the Atacama salt flats high in the Andes puts Bolivia, Chile and Argentina – the so-called lithium triangle – at the heart of a global scramble for the minerals to build the next generation of electric powered cars. Familiarity with Spanish and experience of management would be a plus, but the key requirement is the ability to generate insightful, value-added coverage across a range of areas. Politically, the Southern Cone is at the forefront of a shift to the right in Latin America and investors are closely watching the progress of reform efforts by business-friendly governments in Argentina and Chile. Meanwhile, concerns over environmental degradation and the uneven benefits of development can often put international corporations such as miners – many of them increasingly from developing nations like China – at odds with local communities. Crime – from arms trafficking in the lawless triborder area with Brazil to cocaine labs deep in the Peruvian jungle and high-level corruption across the region – remains a constant challenge to governance. We are seeking a journalist capable of tackling all these themes, plus more besides, and explaining their significance to a global audience.
