Head of Platform Engineering & Architecture

Role Summary:

The Head of Platform Engineering & Architecture is a full-time position in London. You will be responsible for leading a distributed team of engineers focused on delivery of Reuters news, photos, and video to our consumer-facing products. You will oversee the architecture and implementation of our backend data systems, content delivery APIs, and cloud-based infrastructure. As an experienced systems architect, you’ll design services and APIs that scale and allow for product experimentation and innovation. As an experienced engineering manager, you’ll implement best practices and patterns for high-quality and maintainable software development.

Major Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

The Head of Platform Engineering & Architecture manages technical teams and is a focal point for architectural decisions across the Reuters Consumer division. You’re a manager of Development Team Leaders, Developers and other technical roles. Specifically, you’ll:

  • Provide technology leadership across Reuters Consumer to deliver world-class news products;
  • Deliver high quality, highly available, reliable, scalable, and secure capabilities around service-based architectures and tools;
  • Provide leadership and guidance on standards, best practices for services implementation and developer productivity tools by constantly incorporating the best-in-class technologies and standards;
  • Hire and retain top talent in the industry; inspire the organisation by exceeding expectations of end-users, business partners, and cross-enterprise product and engineering teams;
  • Lead standardisation of deployment architecture and automation for the team;
  • Focus on learning, applying, and extending best-in-class industry practices to continue to raise the bar on providing developer delight and speed of delivery for the team; and
  • International travel will be required.

Technical/Professional Skills & Competencies:

Essential Skills & Experience Required:

  • Opinionated about how development teams work together, collaborate, organise, and ensure the quality of their output;
  • Experience designing and delivering robust, high-volume, highly reliable, and highly available APIs for use in consumer-facing applications;
  • Significant, sound, and proven experience in software architecture and infrastructure (such as service-oriented architectures, micro-services, and API gateways);
  • Confirmed people manager able to provide mentorship, vision, and motivation for a globally distributed team and transform it into a successful execution strategy;
  • Adept at developing in one or more common programming languages such as Java, Go, C++, and C; and
  • Hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms, including an understanding of scalability, security, serverless architecture, and cost control concerns.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Familiarity with mobile app development considerations;
  • Some experience with modern web development environments and frameworks such as Node.js and React;
  • Prior experience in the news or media industries is a plus; and
  • A sense of humour always helps.


  • BS in Computer Sciences or Engineering or equivalent required.
