Business Unit: Reuters
Position Title: European Government Bonds Correspondent (JREQ100680)
Location: London, Canary Wharf
The London Markets team is looking for a talented and ambitious journalist who can get under the skin of the euro zone government bond market and deliver the stories that matter to our wide range of clients. Debt markets have been at the heart of the European political, economic, and investment stories over a tumultuous decade that careened from a global banking collapse to the Greek bankruptcy, default and serial bailouts and then to the financial rescues of Ireland and Portugal, the battle to save the euro from unravelling and the dramatic interventions of Mario Draghi’s European Central Bank.
After more than two years of extraordinary stimulus during which the ECB has imposed negative interest rates and bought more than 1 trillion euros of government bonds, the euro economy is finally responding with its best growth in years. Policymakers are preparing to wind down their unprecedented support. How this plays out could have a major impact on the future of the single currency and Europe’s plans forever deeper integration post-Brexit. The stakes are high, as markets assess what German government takes shape after this year’s election, how Spain copes with next month’s Catalan referendum and how Italy navigates next year’s return to the ballot box.
Market reporting is all about focus and finding the story rather than routine wrapups of price actions. The successful candidate will be able to capture the most eye-catching developments in one of the world’s most important and diverse financial markets. S/he will also be expected to devise and deliver agenda-setting, data-driven analysis that set Reuters apart from the competition. Major Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
Key duties include real-time coverage of major market developments including focused daily reports, collaborating with euro zone bureaux on breaking news and joint-bylined stories, and originating and executing compelling, data-driven initiative stories on all aspects of the bond market and the industry. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop and use buyside and sellside sources to break news. S/he will be able to work in a small team and in close coordination with reporters across our European newsrooms. The role also involves covering policymakers in the field and regularly writing our highly-read Global Markers report.
